The United Nations have designated 1st October 2019 as International Older Peoples's Day and the theme for the day is ‘The Journey to Age Equality.’

In Bury, we plan to tackle old age inequalities and make our borough an age-friendly place to live, by setting up an Age-friendly Partnership Group and co-producing a Delivery Plan with key stakeholders. If you would like to get involved with this work, please e-mail

Our Older People’s Staying Well Team will also be celebrating the day by raising awareness in the town centre around Kay Gardens (09:30-11:30am) and speaking to people about positive ageing.

This will be followed by a social event in the afternoon at the old library at Castle Leisure Centre (12:30-4:30pm) where people will have the opportunity to feedback their stories of ageism and/or positive experiences in later life.  There will be a number of teams who offer support to older people borough wide attending this social afternoon. It is open to anyone who wishes to discuss or seek support for older people.

In addition, the team will be asking people, groups and organisations to pledge their support for International Older People’s Day online. If you would like to know more, please e-mail
