Climate Change in Bury and action being taken

#ShowYourStripes – Ed Hawkins (University of Reading)

Welcome to the 'Climate Action' section of The Bury Directory.

Our climate is changing due to human activity, this includes global warming and greater risk of flooding, droughts, and heat waves. We need to do all we can to tackle the issue and reduce our impact upon the planet. Each and every one of us can get involved and make a difference no matter how small.

Bury Council have declared a climate emergency and produced a Climate Action Strategy and adjoining Action Plan, but now we need to take decisive action while simultaneously encouraging our local businesses, residents, community groups and local environmental groups to join us in taking action too.

In order to better engage with our local communities, we’ve established a Climate Strategic Board bringing together external partners and stakeholders as well as including representation from local action groups. We’re also working with our Neighbourhood Hubs and community action groups to better disseminate information and encourage action.

As part of our engagement drive, a Community Climate Action Fund was established, and the Council have helped fund a dozen projects across Bury promoting various actions. Check out the table below for a list of ongoing projects. There are dozens more action groups across Bury working on various issues across Bury, if you’re interested in getting involved with a group but don’t know where to get started, you can get in touch with Bury Council’s Climate Action Team via climate@bury.gov.uk and we’ll provide guidance and direction so you too can get involved.
