A primary role of the team is to ensure that Raising Participation Age is met so that all young people are in education or training until their 18th birthday.

The Education and Skills Act 2008 increased the minimum age at which young people in England can leave learning. Raising the Participation Age does not mean that young people need to stay on in school.  It means that they have to stay in education or training until they are 18.This can be:-

  • Full time education (sixth form college, school sixth form, further education college, University Technical College)
  • An Apprenticeship or Traineeship
  • Part-time education or training combined with one of the following: employment or self-employment for 20 hours or more a week, or volunteering for 20 hours or more a week

The 14-19 Team works closely with a wide range of partners to ensure that there are opportunities for all young people including those who are young offenders, teen mums, looked after children and those with special educational needs as they move from school at 16.

The team works with Bury Secondary Schools and our two colleges to ensure that young people are aware of all pathways at 16 and at 18 including further/higher education, Apprenticeships, Traineeships and employment.

We advise and support schools that are working towards the Quality in Careers Standard, which is a nationally recognised standard for careers education, information, advice and guidance, which most local schools and colleges have achieved or are involved in.

The team also works with young people up to their 25th birthday with high needs to secure suitable provision to help them with education and personal development.
