About Us:

STARS is a group for young disabled people aged 16 years and over.

We promote self-advocacy, provide transitional support and offer greater social opportunities to young people within Bury.

What we do:

STARS was formed in March 2015 by a group of young people with disabilities. We have set up a website, email address and telephone line in order for both young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) as well as professionals. We aim to provide support, fun and friendship as well as advocating the views and rights of children and young people with SEND.

  • We offer telephone and online support for children and young people with SEND in Bury. This may include mentoring, advocacy and support. Please contact us if you would like support.
  • We run a Thursday night youth group for young people over 18 years old with SEND in Bury. Please contact us if you would like to attend or if you would like to become a member of STARS.
  • To enhance their social opportunities, members have enjoyed activities such as bowling, cinema trips, quizzes, Boxercise, meditation, themed parties/events and a dedicated summer activities programme.
  • We offer consultative work, training and workshops to other organisations and professionals around how to support children and young people with SEND and in gathering their views. Subjects we have covered in our workshops include: Hate Crime Awareness, Disability Awareness and Independent Living skills. Please contact us if you are looking for support in these areas.
  • Some of our consultation work has included: Gathering views on Home-School transport provision in Bury, EHC Plans and one page profiles.
  • STARS have also successfully secured funding towards the cost of residential holidays, mental wellbeing activity packs (during lockdown) and for an 8 week project involving a regular Supper Club.
  • We have also created a fun video featuring young people explaining the SEND changes in a clear and simple way. To watch our video, please visit our YouTube
