Are you drinking too much?
“Communities in Charge of Alcohol” (CICA) is a Greater Manchester initiative that has been developed by Bury Council alongside Public Health England and Greater Manchester Devolution.
The project aims to kick start the development of a network of community alcohol champions. It builds on the principle that local communities should be empowered to take charge of their own health, and that people within communities are best placed to influence their friends, families and colleagues.
The Council recruits volunteers who will receive accredited training from the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Level Two award Understanding Alcohol Misuse.
The champions will be trained to:
- Have informal conversations about alcohol and health with family, friends and colleagues
- Support people to reduce drinking through brief advice or guiding them towards specialist services
- Attending local community events to speak to people about alcohol and health
- Provide support for communities to get involved with licensing decisions by helping them raise issues with the Local Authority about venues selling alcohol.
The project is currently in the Radcliffe/Radcliffe East wards
The scheme will be continually looking for volunteers to support the Alcohol Health Champions to ensure the project continues to spread its good work.
If you would like any further information, either to contact a champion, or you would like to be involved in the scheme yourself, please contact the Live Well Service.
