Sense is a national disability charity that supports people with complex communication needs to be understood, connected and valued. We are here for every person who faces communication barriers in a world that relies on being able to see and hear well to be connected.

Our flexible and personalised services empower people to communicate and express themselves – be it through speech or sign, touch or movement, gesture or sound, art or dance. Together, we connect differently and campaign passionately for the right to lead connected and fulfilled lives.

Sense Specialist Services for Children and Young People offers support from early childhood until the young person moves into adulthood. The team work primarily with:

  • Children who are deafblind/multi-sensory impaired.
  • Children who have medical conditions that are likely to cause problems with sight and hearing as they grow older.
  • Support is also available to children who have either a sight or Hearing Impairment combined with other needs, such as learning or physical disabilities.

Being a parent of a child with sensory impairment and complex communication needs is challenging. That’s why we do everything in our power to support you; to get you the help you need and deserve; to give you the confidence to navigate the system; and to allow you to be in touch with people who will empathise and understand.

Our Sense Specialist Services for Children include:

  • Specialist advice to help your child to communicate, learn and develop.
  • Individual holistic Assessment to highlight your child’s strengths and strategies to support them to develop.
  • Support with multi-sensory impairment (MSI) identification to ensure that your child receives the specialist support they need.
  • Early intervention, including early years groups.
  • Transition advice and support as your child prepares for adulthood.
  • Family events.
  • Online information and support groups.
  • Signposting you to specialist assessments, if appropriate.
  • Additional direct support at times of specific need.
