There are two main categories of care homes available in Bury:
1. Care Homes without Nursing Care (Residential Care)
Standard Residential Care provides accommodation, meals and assistance with personal care whenever the need arises over a 24 hour period. If the person has any nursing needs, assistance may be provided by the District Nursing Service visiting whenever they are needed. 'High Dependency' residential care indicates additional moving and handling needs such as requiring a hoist to move.
2. Care Homes with Nursing Care
Nursing Care provides accommodation, meals and assistance with personal care and additionally, access to qualified nursing staff on duty 24 hours per day.

Both main categories of care are further divided by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) into the following different groups:
- Old Age - provide assistance for people who have physical illnesses that may be classed as more common in old age such as stroke, loss of mobility etc.
- Residential Dementia - for people with onset dementia.
- Nursing Dementia - for people in the later stages of dementia.
- Mental Illness - provide assistance for people who have a mental illness other than dementia.
- Physical Disability - provide assistance for people who have a medical condition that that affects their physical ability.
- Learning Disabilities - provides assistance for people who have been assessed as having a Learning Disability.
