Forced Marriages & Honour based abuse
Forced Marriages & Honour based abuse
Forced marriages are an abuse of human rights that cannot be justified or rectified by religious or cultural reasoning.
Forced marriages are when one or both parities are forced to marry against their will. It is important that anyone in this situation knows their legal and human rights as well as who can help support them if they decide not to go through with the marriage as it can be dangerous to decline.
“Honour” based violence is becoming more and more of an issue within our community. Whilst the perpetrator may view their actions as protecting cultural or religious beliefs, if the victim has shamed the family or the community, it is actually a form of abuse that can be very serious.
It is important to remember that whilst we must be accepting of different cultures, we should not be accepting of unacceptable practices or traditions.
This section of the directory provides a list of organisations and charities that are experienced in helping people get through these situations.
