In England and Wales, almost all households reported that they had central heating in 2021 (98.5%) with 1.5% (367,000) households having no central heating.  Bury was slightly higher for households with central heating at 98.7% and 1.3% having no central heating.  The most common responses were for mains gas central heating.

In 2011, 2.7% of households in England and Wales and 2.4% in Bury did not have central heating.

The table below shows the different types of central heating for England and Wales in 2021.

Category "Other central heating" also includes the categories "Tank or bottled gas only", "Oil only", "Wood Only" and "Solid Fuel only".

 

For the first time, Census 2021 recorded whether a household’s central heating used renewable energy sources. Overall, 0.9% of households in England and Wales (233,000) used at least one renewable energy source. A total of 0.5% (135,000) reported using renewable energy alongside another type of central heating, and the remaining 0.4% (99,000) used only renewable energy sources.

Elton Vale had the highest percentage of households with central heating at 99.7%.  Fernhill & Pimhole had the lowest percentage at 97.4%.

North Manor had the highest percentage of households with central heating at 99.6%.  Bury East had the lowest percentage at 97.7%.
