Keep in touch regularly

  • Regular and protected time to come into school or college to discuss any concerns emphasises to parents/carers that they are an important part of the school community.

  • Scheduled and private meetings are appreciated by parents/carers as it can be difficult to maintain confidentiality during unstructured times, such as the end of the school day.

  • Having a key adult/point of contact in school or college is helpful for parents/carers. This is someone who comes to know and understand their child well, which is important and builds trust and confidence.

  • Having a timetable of different activities and events for parents/carers throughout the year helps to build support networks, support transitions between year groups, share information and learning (e.g. open days, workshops on different topics, activity and/or coffee mornings).

  • Encouraging parents/carers to set up their own network or parent/carer group is a powerful way to empower and create long-lasting support within your school/ college community.

  • Positive messages at home makes a huge difference to children and young people and parents/carers, through sharing good news and celebrating all successes.
