Speech and Language Therapists are clinical experts in the Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of communication, voice and swallowing disorders. These difficulties may be as a result of:

  • Progressive neurological diseases e.g. Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Huntington’s chorea.
  • Dementia
  • Head injury / Traumatic brain injury
  • Cancer of the head, neck and throat (including laryngectomy)
  • Chronic Obstructive Airway Disorder (COPD)
  • Vocal Misuse
  • Mental Health Issues
  • General debilitation due to the ageing process
  • Neurological difficulties
  • .. and other conditions.

Speech and Language Therapists work in partnership with the individual, family and other professionals to reduce the impact of the communication and/or swallowing difficulty on the person’s health, wellbeing and ability to participate in everyday life. They also input into the Assessment of a patient’s mental capacity in order that patient’s best interests are properly served.

Community Speech and Language Therapist will see patients in a variety of locations including:

  • Outpatient Clinics
  • Patients home or Care Home Facility (Community Services)
  • Intermediate Care settings (Community Services)

The Speech and Language Therapy department also provides specialist training to professional staff and carers around all areas of swallowing and communication disorders.

Service Hours are currently Monday to Friday 8.30am-4.30pm (excluding bank holidays).
