The world famous Besses Boys' Band is possibly the country's best-known junior band. It claims to be the country's oldest-surviving youth band, having been established in 1943 primarily as a "feeder" band for the renowned Besses o'th' Barn Band 1818 many of whose players were, at that time, away serving in the forces. But for more than 30 years, Besses Boys Band has operated completely independently of the senior band.

The renowned band has held the North West Area championship title for a record 11 times and is the only band to have represented England at every European Youth championship since the inauguration in 1988. Today Besses Boys' Band is a second section North West Area brass band and has a history that no other organization in the United Kingdom can rival. Still to this day the band has qualified for the 2019 National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain for what will be the fourth time this decade.

The band represents Whitefield, the surrounding area and the County in national contest championships, entertains the general public through performance and encourages children to learn musical instruments whilst developing talent and performance skills. We have a great balance of age and experience and the amount of young players who achieve so much with the band is amazing.

We have performed throughout Great Britain, Europe and Australia and have performed to high class figures, many celebrities, dignitaries and her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Our events include concerts, community events, charity events and private bookings.

We continually educate young musicians in performance and musicianship and bring the next generation of young musicians through the ranks and allow them the necessary platform to showcase their talent whilst providing community entertainment to people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.

The band put on a series of events throughout the year which include free community concerts and charity events. We are a non-profit organization currently undergoing the application for charitable status and are fundraising to support the main band on the journey to the national championship as we represent the North West of England and also in need of the necessary funds to continue to provide an education to the next generation of talent that will one day perform on National Stages throughout the UK and Europe.

The band is self-financed by its members, along with income from concerts and sponsorship. The band regularly participate in many community events and in summer 2017 helped raise over £2,000 for the Manchester Emergency Fund.
