Get in the saddle


Cheaper than the car, faster than your feet: we’ve opened up cycling courses to more people living or working in Greater Manchester.

Learn for the first time. Build your confidence. Drive safely around cyclists. Whatever you’re looking to learn, we’ve got a course to fit.


Bury currently have the following courses available...


Cycle Training Complete Beginner:

This one hour group session is for you if you cannot ride a bike. 

Cost: FREE!

Our instructors will support you through the following:

  • Introduction to Bike and Safety Equipment
  • Mounting and Dismounting
  • Scooting and Braking
  • Pedal Ready and Go
  • Stopping Safely
  • Making the bike go where you want it to in a large open space.


Cycle Training Confidence Builder:

This two hour group session is for you if you can ride a bike a little bit but would like to develop your confidence and skills in readiness for doing more riding.

Cost: FREE!

Our instructors will support you through the following:

  • Making the bike go where you want it to with more accuracy
  • Observation and Signalling
  • Emergency Stopping
  • Use of Gears to help making riding easier
  • Riding with other people
  • Riding in public spaces - care and attention for others, and anticipation

Once you've mastered these skills you'll be ready to progress to the next level and begin to learn about riding on quiet roads. 


Basic Maintenance:

This training is for you if you would like to learn how to look after your bike and carry out simple maintenance.

The basic maintenance course is provided at the subsidised cost of £10

You will learn: About the parts of your bike and what they do.

What to check before you ride - How to adjust the saddle, handlebars, brakes and gears - How to mend punctures.

Led by a bike maintenance expert, you'll be in a small group with other beginners in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. It's a hands-on session which will give you the confidence and skills to keep your bike on the move. It's best to bring your own bike to work on, but we can lend you one if necessary. The sessions last two hours and are held across Greater Manchester.


Intermediate Maintenance:

This course is for you if you have a basic knowledge of bike maintenance, but want to extend your skills to take on more complex tasks and save money on repairs.

The intermediate maintenance course is provided at the subsidised cost of £30

You will learn how to: Adjust your brakes - Adjust and index gears - Inspect and replace cables - Check and maintain your chain - Carry out routine servicing

Led by a cycle maintenance expert, you'll be in a small group with others of similar experience in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. It's an intensive hands-on session which will give you the confidence and skills to keep your bike in top condition. It's best to bring your own bike to work on, but we can lend you one if necessary. The session lasts six hours and are held across Greater Manchester.
