Sexual Orientation

Sexual Orientation

The question on sexual orientation was new for Census 2021 and was voluntary only asked of those aged 16 years and over.  Sexual orientation is an umbrella term covering sexual identity, attraction, and behaviour.  The question asked “Which of the following best describes your sexual orientation?” with 4 answer options of straight or heterosexual, gay or lesbian, bisexual, other sexual orientation.  If they selected other sexual orientation, they were asked to write in the sexual orientation with which they identified.

93.5% of the population aged 16 years and over in Bury answered the question, which is slightly higher than the 92.5% answering the question in England and Wales.

The table below shows sexual orientation by MSOA in Bury.

Bank Top & Radcliffe East had the highest number of Straight or Heterosexual answers at 93.6% with Whitehead Park the lowest at 85.1%.
