Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)

Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)

If having followed cycles of APDR (see Assess-Plan-Do-Review cycles), there are ongoing concerns about the progress and level of support a child or young person needs, an EHC assessment should be considered. This can be requested by the school or college, a young person themselves (over the age of 16) or parents/carers.

An EHC assessment aims to identify the type and level of support needed at school or college. As part of the assessment, professionals will gather information from you, your child and school/college to understand your child's strengths and needs.

Your views are a really important part of the EHC assessment.

What is in the EHCP?

The EHCP includes lots of information all about your child and family. This includes things that they like and enjoy, people who are important to them and information about their school or college.

The EHCP has different sections, which are usually given a letter (Section A, Section B and so on). You can learn more about the different sections here.
