Physical Activity (Self Care)

Physical Activity (Self Care)

Aside from keeping us physically healthy, physical activity makes us feel good and can be a great way to meet new people.  Being active is important from early years to our ageing years .  It not only reduces our risk of serious illness but also enables us to stay fit enough to keep doing the things we enjoy.

  • This video is a great way to introduce healthy living messages to children and young people
  • As an adult, do you know how much activity you should aim for, or which activities to choose? These government guidelines can help

Bury Public Health understands that the gym or sporting offers aren’t for everyone, the main thing is to do something you enjoy.  Aside from leaving you feeling better both physically and mentally, choosing an enjoyable activity makes it more likely you will keep doing it and make it part of your daily routine.

Get Active, Stay Healthy

Evidence suggests that people who do regular physical activity have:

  • up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke

  • up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes

  • up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer

  • up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer

  • a 30% lower risk of early death

  • up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis

  • up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture

  • a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults)

Physical activity does not just have physical benefits. Mentally, it can help to lift your mood, reduce stress, and prevent the onset of dementia as we move through life and socially it’s a great way to meet people.

How to get active

Adults should aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day on at least five days per week.  Children and young people should be doing twice that amount. It doesn’t have to be a vigorous workout and you can find ways to fit physical activity into your daily routine – it may be as simple as walking to and from the shops, school, or work.

Don’t forget weight baring exercises as part of your activity, anything you do that strengthens your bones and muscles is particularly important for keeping you healthy for longer and especially as we get older.

If you know what type of activity you fancy doing, why not type the name of the activity into Bury Directory, try mindfulness, Zumba , chair based exercise , balance bikes , gymnastics , walking football and many more , a good starting point is the below Bury Public Health supported offers, all of which can be found in the 'Related Links' section at the bottom of the page.

For more information on the above offers, contact Bury Sports Development on sports.development@bury.gov.uk
