Details
- The Outreach Team sits under the direction of the Strategic Lead for SEND and Inclusion to provide support and advice for schools, settings and parents in meeting the needs of children and young people with SEND. A team of Outreach Officers and Assistants is being recruited to represent a diverse range of skills and backgrounds. The service supports the Primary School Locality Areas and the Secondary Inclusion Partnerships and works closely with the SEND support, EHCP, Early Help, Mental Health in Schools and Educational Psychology teams. The Outreach Team works within the SEND code of practice (section 6) to support schools to implement the graduated approach as follows: Assess-observation and consultation to identify strengths and needs. Assessment tools may be recommended to accurately identify strengths and needs. Plan-person centred planning involving parents, school staff and other professionals where appropriate to plan approaches, strategies and interventions to build on strengths and support needs. Do-support and monitoring of interventions, approaches and strategies. Review-identify outcomes and refine planning, then continue the cycle. Referrals are taken via the Multi-Agency Inclusion Panel (MIP) Support at an earlier stage can be accessed via attendance at the Elmsbank Outreach Support Surgeries attended by professionals including Bury’s Outreach Team and as part of the Dyslexia Aware Quality Mark (DAQM) and Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) accreditation processes. Dyslexia Aware Quality Mark The DAQM was relaunched in January for Bury schools, led by Bury’s Outreach Team. The award itself recognises the ways in which schools support all children to access learning and offers the opportunity to reflect on and evaluate their own practice against the DAQM standards, identifying areas of strength as well as areas for development. The DAQM standards and the external validation process encourage schools to review policies, practices, and cultures in a systematic and consistent way. Having awareness of the standards is a useful element in meeting children’s needs within the classroom by adapting the environment for different learning requirements. This key step will very often improve engagement, relationships and confidence levels in children and avoid an escalation in presentation. Many children presenting with SEMH needs often have an underlying learning need which is unmet. For further information contact: sue.evans@bury.gov.uk; Inclusion Quality Mark Caroline Haughton (Inclusion project manager) is currently seconded for two days a week to work alongside the Outreach and SEND support teams. Her role on these days is to lead on the Inclusion Quality Mark and support schools currently involved in the Whole Education SEND improvement programme. Her role for the remainder of the week is Deputy Head and SENDco at St Thomas’s Primary School. For a number of years Bury has offered schools the opportunity to work towards accreditation against Bury's local Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) standards. There are several schools that have attained the award and have been recognised for their commitment and dedication to promoting the values of equality, diversity and inclusive practice. Schools are offered the opportunity to evaluate their provision and practice against the IQM standards. Together with the external validation process, the standards encourage schools to review policies, practices and cultures in a systematic and consistent way. Evidence towards the IQM standards is gathered over time, with schools needing to achieve 80% of the overall standards to be successfully accredited. The quality mark itself provides a standard for inclusion and direction in terms of school practice, whilst strengthening the rational for improving educational experiences and outcomes for all. For further information, e mail : c.haughton@bury.gov.uk I also work with other services across Education, Health and Social Care to provide advice and support for the inclusion of children and young people with SEND in education settings.
