Did you know?

  • The NHS belongs to all of us – help us to keep it working smoothly by turning up for appointments
  • Every time you see a GP it costs the NHS £43, on average, for a 12-minute consultation
  • A visit to Accident and Emergency costs £112

According to the International Self- Care Foundation, self-care is what people do for themselves in order to establish and maintain health, and to prevent and deal with illness through self- medication and social prescription.

Self-care to individuals mean that they are more able to maintain their own care needs in relation to:

  • Prevention
  • Mental wellbeing
  • Minor ailments
  • Long term conditions

Self-care techniques and general lifestyle changes can help manage the symptoms of many mental health problems.

They may also help prevent some problems from developing or getting worse.

Here are some tips for looking after yourself that you might find helpful:

  • stay aware of your mental health
  • nourish your social life
  • try peer support
  • make time for therapeutic activities
  • look after your physical health
  • contact a specialist organisation

If these work well for you then you may find you don't need any formal treatment.

However, it’s important to remember that there is unlikely to be an instant solution.

Recovering from a mental health problem is likely to take time, energy and work.
