What is an EHCP?

What is an EHCP?

An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document that sets out a description of a child/young person's special educational, health and social care needs. It will describe the child/ young person's aspirations and desired outcomes and the SEN/health/social care provision (what will be done) that is required to meet these outcomes. An EHCP can be in place from 0-25 years of age (if required) and will support a young person in preparing for adulthood.

There are several resources available to explain EHCPs to staff, parents/carers and children and young people, for example:

  • Video explaining what is an Education, Health and Social Care (EHC) plan (3 minutes long)

  • Handout for parents/carers – Education, Health and Care Plans, everything you need to know (Twinkl) (Related files section)

  • PowerPoint for staff – What is an EHCP (Related files section)

  • What is an Education, Health and Social Care (EHC) plan? (updated 2019)
