Understanding language

Understanding language

This page is part of the Speech and Language Therapy - Paediatric Community Services information

Has your child ever looked at you with a blank expression when you've asked a question? Do they get a little confused with specific words like 'under', 'full' or 'he/she'? Do you often need to point to, look at or show what you mean as well as say the words?

Understanding of spoken language develops gradually and there are many skills that need to be in place for this to happen. Some of these skills include; being interested and engaged, listening, paying attention to the other person, making links between the language they hear and the world around them. Understanding of language and expression interact closely so by helping one area you help the other. You are in the best position to help your child develop their understanding of language and you can do this during your everyday, shared experiences e.g. bath time, meal times, playtime.

Take a look at the drop down boxes below for information and activities to help develop your child's understanding of language. Head over to the related documents section of this page for printable activity sheets to target the below Information Carrying Words.
